For Your Consideration: Playlists

Pride, Love & Joy

I don’t think it’s any secret that music is really important to me. I can spend hours creating playlists and choosing the right songs that fit my own personal brief. In the 80’s music was new too me. I was obsessed with the charts on Sunday and boy bands. The 90’s brought something new, indie music and the Madchester scene set up my listening - Oasis, James, Blur, The Bluetones, and Pulp, all filled my Walkman (and they will appear in a later playlist). In the 00’s however, I clung to the 90’s. I listened to the same music and didn’t really step out of my comfort zone. It wasn’t until the long term relationship I was in broke down when music turned into something else. I was alone and music became a support and a distraction and rather than hit play on an Oasis album, I turned instead to Nelly Furtado, Dido, Alanis and Lauren Hill. Since then my musical choices have been ‘varied’. I found myself turning to female artists more, Beyoncé, Gaga, Amy Winehouse, Lilly Allen, La Roux and Bjork to name a few. More recently I’ve discovered Janelle Monáe, Paloma and Betty Who. So when it came to choosing songs the right songs for my next playlist I found myself turning to these artists and more. Songs that made me feel love. Songs that made me feel strong and supported. Songs that have flipped a switch, own my identity and make me think hard about life, love and what it means to me. Some of the songs below are from newly discovered artists, some are old, some I originally chose don’t appear because of various reasons. I call it my Pride, Love And Joy playlist because that’s what it is.

  1. Love this! A couple of these are new to me artists, so this will be a fun one. I, too, had a period where I clung to the music of my teen years, but then I saw a Mumford & Sons performance, and that got me into a lot of the "new folk" bands. Janelle is also a game-changer for me. Thanks for this!

    1. No problem. Some of the songs won’t be to everyone’s taste but they mean something to me. Which artists are new to you?

    2. Christine & the Queers, Betty Who, Mai Lan. I know who Troye Sivan and Years & Years are, but have never heard their music.

    3. Mai Lan is new to me but Spotify is a wonderful thing for discovering new artists.
